The Toronto City Hall green roof was opened to the public last year.  Since its grand opening, it has become a popular stopping point for many of Toronto’s citizens, as well as visitors from around the globe.

The green roof is located on the podium roof of the unique City Hall complex.  New landscaped gardens, courtyards, terraces, furniture and walkways provide unique views of downtown from this urban oasis in the heart of the city.

Designed to be an urban oasis, approximately 35,000 square feet of concrete on the podium roof has been transformed into living vegetation to reduce the building’s environmental impact and for residents and visitors to enjoy all year around.  Aside from adding another green space to the city, the podium is said to improve thermal and sound insulation, air quality and will create a habitat for birds and small animals.

Chris Pommer of PLANT architects, co-designer of the garden, tells why spaces like this are so important:

“If you don’t take care of your main public space, where we come together to celebrate, to mourn, to protest, how can we expect people to take care of the rest of the world?”

Hudson River Park’s Stonefield In Manhattan, NY Features Permaloc Edging

Friday, Jul. 8th 2011 10:41 AM

Hudson River Park is a waterside park on the Hudson River that extends from 59th Street south to Battery Park in the New York City borough of Manhattan. Bicycle and pedestrian paths span the park north to south, opening up the waterfront for recreational use. The park includes tennis and soccer fields, batting cages, children’s playground, dog run, recreational piers, and many other features.

One of the features attracting a lot of attention is a sculpture installation called Stonefield, designed by artist Meg Webster.  To create Stonefield, large stones were chosen from quarries in New York State and the northeast corner of Pennsylvania. They were selected for their special shapes and unusual sculptural qualities.  Some are very colorful, some are concave, some craggy, one is very tall, another shaped somewhat like a boat.  Each is special. They are arranged to show their unique characteristics and individuality.

Stonefield is located in the Chelsea area of the park.  The Chelsea area, including Piers 62, 63, and 64, was designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, and is the newest jewel in Hudson River Park’s emerald necklace of waterfront piers and promenades.

Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates specified Permaloc’s CleanLine aluminum landscape edging to form various bedding areas within the design, including circles with the sculpture installation itself.
