Michael Van Valkenburgh’s Brooklyn Bridge Park

Tuesday, Aug. 30th 2011 3:08 PM

Located on Brooklyn’s waterfront under the Brooklyn Bridge and across from the southern tip of Manhattan, this small gem of a park, designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, offers breathtaking views. Visitors stop and gaze at the postcard-perfect sights of New York City while sitting on the park’s steps or picnicking on its grass.

The goal of the Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates 2005 Master Plan for the entire 85 acres of Brooklyn Bridge Park, as defined by the community and the client, was to create an environmentally and economically sustainable park that encouraged new public uses of the urban waterfront. In addition to a programming framework that makes the best use of the structural capacity of existing piers, detailed maintenance and upkeep projections for the park were used to create associated development models that could satisfy a requirement for economic self-sufficiency.

Watch Michael Van Valkenburgh tour the park in these videos below:

You probably noticed the beautiful winding pathways in the videos. Each of these are edged with Permaloc’s AsphaltEdge product!

NYC High Line Park Has Permaloc Edging

Thursday, Aug. 18th 2011 10:54 AM

If you have been following the Landscape Architecture community at all the past few years, you are well aware that the High Line is a 1 mile linear park built along a section of the form elevated freight railroad in New York City’s lower west side.

As proof of the value of green space, the recycling of the railway into an urban park has spurred real estate development in the neighborhoods which lie along the line.  What was once an eyesore in disrepair has been turned into a stunning urban oasis that attracts people by the thousands.

The park was designed by James Corner’s New York-based Landscape Architecture firm Field Operations, along with architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro.  Planting design was done by Piet Oudolf from the Netherlands.

In the second section of the High Line, which runs from 20th Street to 30th Street, Permaloc’s CleanLine edging can be spotted around a maintenance trail on the park’s lower level.
